Add a CommentCertainly a different type of film. A good cast with an amusing subject. Not big laughs but enjoyable
I wasn't sure what to expect from a movie about "birding", but this movie was great! It was a touching, fun and entertaining story. Over the course of "the big year" we see the 3 main characters grow and mature, form friendships and rivalries, and figure out what is really important in life.
Pass on this! Boring!! There is no comedy despite the stars, not even dry-wit from Steve Martin. It's all about birding, and the competition to see the most species. That's the movie. Throw in the usual Denehey grumpy-with-heart-attack-father character ... touching at end, but movie is not worth it. Zzzzz...
I thought Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin all did a good job of their roles. But at a surface level, I found it difficult to invest emotionally with the plot -the goal related to birding is a subject matter that has no relevance in my life. However, in consideration of the greater subject of the pursuit of goals at the expense of other parts of life, the topic had a much deeper resonance. Overall I enjoyed The Big Year, but it's not one that I would care to watch over and over again.
